09-13-2010 Inca Trail

This morning I took an hour and a half cab ride at 5am to the train station, then took an hour and a half train ride to the start of the hike to Machu Picchu. The train ride was gorgeous. The scenery passed was so beautiful. The mountains passed were immense. They are so different from the ones in my home state of Colorado. Here, they are mighty. You can just feel their strength and power.

Once the train dropped me off at the start of the trek I came to a rope bridge. Now that was fun! While standing on the bridge, the guide, Frank, joked that the quickest way to Machu Picchu was to jump off the bridge and have the river take you--about half an hour. When crossing the rope bridge I looked up to see two green parrots chasing each other.

The trail has not been so bad hiking-wise. The heat is intense but I'm able to keep trekking forward. The trail and the sites are gorgeous. The trail is lined with my favorite flower, the orchid (the plants are about 6 feet tall!) and many butterflies that dance all around you.
And this is just the first few hours along the trail...
